Overview

Stop the trucks patrolling

The Smart Waste Management System is an initiative by Dev Districts founder Emmanuel Odunlade to revolutionise waste management in Lagos, Nigeria. I designed the entire mechanical system using SolidWorks to create an efficient solution that reduces collection costs and environmental pollution.

The system features smart bins that collect waste, compress it, and send signals to waste management agents about their status and location. That eliminates the need for trucks to constantly patrol looking for full bins, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Process

Concept development

Worked closely with the client to understand the specific waste management challenges in Lagos and develop initial concepts addressing both functionality and urban aesthetics.

Mechanical design

Created detailed 3D models of the compression mechanism, housing and smart components in SolidWorks, ensuring all parts could withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions.

Prototyping

Developed functional prototypes to test the compression system and sensor integration, making iterative improvements based on real-world testing.
