Overview

Can a model be driven by events?

This project was part of an undergraduate research study I conducted in 2011 to explore how SolidWorks could be used to animate a model based on the occurrence of different events. The simulation demonstrates realistic earth-moving digger operation through event-based triggers.

Research objectives

  • Develop a methodology for event-based animation in SolidWorks
  • Create a realistic simulation of heavy equipment operation
  • Test the limits of the software’s motion study capabilities
  • Document best practices for mechanical simulations

Process

Concept development

Researched real-world digger operations and identified key motion sequences that could be triggered by events. Developed a storyboard for the complete animation cycle.

3D modelling

Created detailed 3D models of all digger components, ensuring proper mating relationships for realistic movement, then applied appropriate materials and textures.

Motion study setup

Configured motion studies with event-based triggers to simulate digging, lifting and dumping sequences, and fine-tuned the timing and transitions between operations.

Validation and refinement

Compared simulation results with real equipment operation videos, adjusting parameters to improve realism and ensure proper sequencing of mechanical movements.
